How Rotomoulding Supports Water Security in Pacific Communities

When people think about water security, they often think about dams, pipelines and treatment plants. Yet for many communities across the Pacific, reliable access to clean water can depend on something much simpler: safe, durable and readily available water storage.

This World Water Week, ARMA is highlighting the important role rotational moulding can play in strengthening water security, particularly in communities where infrastructure is vulnerable to disruption.

A recent disaster response in Vanuatu provides a powerful example of how local rotomoulding capability can help communities recover quickly and build resilience for the future.

Responding to the Vanuatu Earthquake

Following the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Port Vila, Vanuatu, on 17 December 2024, damage to water supply infrastructure left many people struggling to access clean water for drinking and everyday use.

To help address this need, the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission (VFSC) coordinated a relief initiative and engaged Pacific Polytanks Limited to work with affected community organisations.

As an established local manufacturer and longstanding supplier to VFSC, Pacific Polytanks was well placed to support the relief effort. With water storage solutions already being manufactured in Vanuatu and local delivery capabilities in place, the company was able to supply and distribute tanks, complete with the required fittings, to schools and churches across Port Vila.

In total, the project provided:

• 9 × 10,000-litre water tanks

• 23 × 5,000-litre water tanks

• 2 × 3,000-litre water tanks

A total of 34 rotomoulded water tanks were distributed to support communities impacted by the earthquake.

Restoring Critical Water Storage

The project benefited a wide range of schools and churches throughout Port Vila, helping restore water storage capacity for facilities that play an important role in community life.

Damage caused by the earthquake affected water storage systems that normally supplied Port Vila. By providing new storage capacity to schools and churches, the project helped restore access to water for children, teachers, church members and nearby residents.

Reliable access to clean water is fundamental to health and wellbeing, particularly for communities that depend on these facilities.

The project also demonstrates the value of having manufacturing capability close to the communities that need it. In a disaster recovery situation, the ability to manufacture, supply and deliver essential infrastructure locally can help reduce delays and support a faster response.

Why Rotomoulding?

Rotomoulded polyethylene tanks were well suited to the project for several reasons.

Their lightweight construction made transportation and installation easier, while their durability and compliance with AS/NZS 4766:2006 provided confidence that the tanks could perform reliably in demanding conditions.

For disaster recovery and community infrastructure projects, speed of deployment is often critical. The ability to supply and deliver tanks quickly meant communities could begin restoring their water storage capacity without significant delays.

This combination of durability, practicality and local manufacturing capability highlights how rotational moulding can provide solutions to essential infrastructure challenges.

Building Resilience Through Water Storage

The Port Vila response is one example of the broader role rotational moulding can play in supporting water security and community resilience.

With a rotomoulding facility based in Vanuatu, Pacific Polytanks was able to manufacture, supply and deliver critical water storage infrastructure locally, helping communities restore water storage capacity following the earthquake.

While water tanks are a familiar product, their role can be significant. They help communities capture and store clean water and provide reliable storage where infrastructure may be limited, damaged or disrupted.

The Port Vila earthquake relief initiative is just one example. Pacific Polytanks has supported a number of similar projects, including the BHA El Niño Project funded by World Vision in 2024, demonstrating the ongoing role rotomoulded products can play in strengthening community resilience and improving access to safe water across the Pacific.

 

More Than a Product

Water security is about more than infrastructure. It is about supporting communities and ensuring that essential resources remain available when they are needed most.

For communities recovering from disaster, reliable water storage can provide an important foundation for recovery. For communities planning for the future, it can strengthen resilience in the face of disruption.

As World Water Week reminds us, access to clean water remains a global challenge. Across the rotational moulding industry, products that may appear simple are helping address that challenge every day.

The Port Vila response is a practical example of what the industry can achieve: local manufacturing delivering durable solutions to critical community needs, when and where they are needed most.
